Plug-in hybrids proving to be EV stepping stone, Fleet Evolution says

Date: 09 January 2024   |   Author: Sean Keywood

More than two-thirds of plug-in hybrid drivers transition to a full EV for their following car, according to analysis from Fleet Evolution.

The salary sacrifice and fleet management company said this occurred in 70% of cases among its customers, and that this helped make a case for PHEVs as a stepping stone towards going fully electric.

Around half of Fleet Evolution's clients are now said to include PHEVs on their choice lists.

The company's managing director and founder Andrew Leech said: "Our analysis shows us that more than two thirds of drivers who drive a PHEV transition to a fully electric vehicle as their next car.

"There are good reasons for this. PHEV drivers have become fully accustomed to the charging process and they don't suffer range anxiety, having charged their vehicles many times in real life situations. So, they are undaunted by the next step up to a BEV.

"But, perhaps the most important reason for including PHEVs on choice lists is that they are an inclusive and viable option for those 40% of all drivers who do not have access to home charging, be that garage or drive.

"By including PHEVs, companies are providing more flexibility and are not risking alienating those of their employees who cannot charge at home and have to rely on public charging."

Leech said that the costs of ownership for a plug-in hybrid (excluding fuel) were very similar to those of a full EV, and lower than that for an equivalent petrol or diesel model.

He said: "The list price tends to be lower than for a BEV but the [company car tax] BIK bill is higher so that, in the end, they tend to balance each other out.

"We are convinced that BEVs are an extremely valuable benefit to employees and our research shows they are rated highly for their convenience, ease of use and value for money. But, by including PHEVs as well, employers are providing wider choice and not penalising those drivers who have no access to home charging."

When asked by Business Car about the risk of PHEV drivers without home charging just running them as a petrol car and never bothering to plug them in, Leech said that Fleet Evolution customers were offered charger cards that made public charging costs similar to those of home charging, and that a large percentage of its customer fleets offered workplace charging, in many cases via the company's free charger scheme.
