Audi A5 2.7 TDI multitronic: Test Drive

P11d price: £31,760
Key rival: BMW 3-series coupe

Having launched the A5 last year, Audi has now started to fill out its coupe's range.

This is the 190PS 2.7-litre diesel, and 180 and 211PS 2.0 petrols are also coming soon.

Fitting in below the 240PS 3.0 TDI diesel, the 2.7 offers 178g/km and 42.1mpg compared to the bigger engine's 182g/km and 40.9mpg. It's also a bit over £3k cheaper.

This new version of the A5 feels quick enough without ever being devastating, although the refinement masks some of the feeling of speed. The downside is a stiff ride bordering on unacceptable on pot-holed urban roads, but it does settle down considerably at higher speed to make a great motorway cruiser.

A cost of 62.8p per mile is good, and comes thanks to a retained residual value of over 48% on this £31,760 model.

Verdict: Rough ride but pleasant cabin. Decent engine and great looks
