Ford's benchmark for the all-new Fiesta was its old model - in all but design. Thus the new one has the old one's great handling attributes - plus tweaks - and a heavyweight injection of style.

The results are impressive. From all angles in three- and five-door variants the new Fiesta looks great. It's muscular around the front wheel arches and sides and full of bold movement lines.

The quality follows on to the dramatic interior whose centre console is clearly inspired by mobile phone design. It's a visually pleasing look but one that works less well in practice. The centre 'ok' knob - with four compass point buttons round it - is angled too far away from even this six-foot-plus-long-reach driver, so much so, that arm ache can result in use, while the northern most button becomes obscured by the 'ok' one. Other than that it's an uncomplicated design that makes it easy to find and use the system's separate functions.

Rear space is good for a supermini, and the headroom is outstanding; only knee room is slightly compromised. Rear seats fold down well and boot space is a highly credible-for-class 295-979 litres.
