Mazda RX-8 R3: Test Drive

Date: 21 August 2008   |   Author: Tony Rock

Category: Sports
P11d price: £24,540
Key rival: Peugeot 407 coupe

It's been five years since Mazda launched the RX-8, and to mark the mid-point in the four-door coupe's life the Japanese brand has freshened it up by reducing the range to a single £24,995 high-spec model.

The new R3 has a CPM of 71.6p and is powered by what Mazda claims is an improved version of the 1.3-litre rotary engine offering sharper response, although the 231PS?power output remains the same, as does the 0-62mph time (6.4secs) and 146mph top speed.

More apparent are the sports styling pack, bigger exhausts, alloys and new headlamps. Inside Recaro front seats can be found.

Crucially, revisions have also been made to the steering and suspension, to deliver an "even more sporty driving experience". Is it successful? Marginally, but then the car was already a great drive to begin with.

Verdict: Four-seater coupe is sportier than ever but really not cheap to run
