Mercedes C320 CDI Sport estate auto: One Minute Test Drive

Date: 02 October 2008   |   Author: Tristan Young

Category: Upper medium
P11D price: £34,707
Key rival: BMW 3-series Touring

What's new: This range-topping Mercedes C-class diesel estate is powered by a 227PS 3.0-litre engine. And it looks stunning when ordered in Sport trim.

Excellent: Nearly £35,000 and 70.8p per mile might sound high, but for a car of this quality, performance, equipment and practicality, it's a bargain.

Good: Boot space is a very useful 485 litres and a powered boot-lid is standard. The car also feels quicker than the claimed 0-62mph of 7.1 seconds.

Average: Consumption of 37.7mpg would have looked good for a car of this stature a few years ago, but BMW's 330d comes in well above 40mpg, while the Merc's CO2 figure is similarly adrift.

Poor: There really isn't anything poor about this estate car.

Verdict: This is a seriously impressive all-rounder. Order in white if you want to stand out from the crowd; order in darker colours if you want to blend in.
