The 308, launched last year, has a new range-topper with the introduction of the 175PS GT.
Historically famed for hot hatches, this is as quick as the 308 range will get, according to the French firm, with the GT using the engine from its 207 GTi little brother.
It feels quick enough in a straight line, but the 308 is no dynamic match for its Ford Focus and VW Golf rivals.
It's also not cheap, with the £18,995 price tag for the three-door not far off the significantly better Golf GTi, while the 30.5% retained value isn't great, leading to a 52.0 pence per mile prediction from Emmox carcost.
The 180g/km CO2 figure also puts the GT in the 24% tax bracket, which probably isn't a price worth paying unless you're a keen driver, in which case other hotter hatches are probably a better bet.
Verdict: 308 range makes more sense lower down, where great diesels create an intelligent costs case compared to this expensive version
