The start point for the best source of fleet information

Volvo V70 2.0D SE Lux: Test Drive

Date: 03 July 2008   |   Author: Tristan Young

Category: Executive
P11D price: £28,055
Key rival: BMW 5-series Touring

We've already tried the 136PS 2.0-litre diesel engine in Volvo's new entry-level diesel S80, so we'd thought we'd see how it fared when slotted into the Swedish firm's flagship estate.

The 136PS 2.0-litre diesel gives the V70 a new entry point around the £25,000 mark, although not in this spec, and offers 157g/km of CO2 and 47.9mpg.

The engine itself, as in the S80, is impressive, and doesn't feel like you've opted for the runt of the litter. Refinwement and performance are both good too.

The V70 is a classy, practical family tool - the only negatives concern the costs and driving dynamics against the superior BMW 520d Touring.

Verdict: This new diesel engine is a welcome and impressive addition to the range, though 55.6 pence per mile is only average.
