The start point for the best source of fleet information

VW Passat CC 1.8T: Test Drive

Date: 08 September 2008   |   Author: Tristan Young

Category: Upper medium
P11D price: £20,840
Key rival: Alfa Romeo 159

The majority of Passat CCs will be sold as diesels, especially in the business car sector, which is a shame as the entry-level car is powered by a cracking 1.8 turbo petrol engine.

The new engine produces 160PS and in the CC, and the emissions sit at a not unreasonable 180g/km, equating to a 24% benefit-in-kind tax band.

Unfortunately, that's still the wrong side of the upcoming 160g/km capital allowance band, which could result in higher lease costs if your car is registered after March 2009.

The engine is good for a variety of reasons.

Initially the noise hits you, when you accelerate and then lift off the turbo whistles then flutters in a most entertaining way. Power delivery is also pleasing, with plenty of shove low down and even more once you're above 4000rpm, with the rev range topping out at a softly limited 7000. An average fuel consumption of 37.2mpg is more than satisfactory.

The 1.8T matches the Passat CC well. While it's not as nimble as the smaller and more powerful Scirocco, it's not far off in terms of real-world pace. Interestingly, the two cars are almost identically priced; only higher depreciation on the CC means that running costs are 1ppm higher than the Scirocco's 50.3p. You also get a much more grown-up car for the money with more room - although both can only carry four people - more comfort and a classier feel.

Given the sensibilities of fleet, this Passat CC, despite its fractionally higher costs, has to be the car to pick of the two. It might seem an odd choice, but the 1.8T is the gem of the CC range.
