VW Scirocco: Test Drive

Key rival: Alfa Romeo Brera

While VW's long-awaited Scirocco is finally available in the UK, tax reasons mean user-choosers will probably wait for the diesel derivatives arriving next year.

In the meantime we've tested the single 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine option.

The car sits low and wide and is perfectly menacing, and drives as well on UK roads as it did when we tested it on the international launch. Standard clever suspension that comes with three options - comfort, normal and sport - helps. Unlike the settings on some systems, VW's do exactly what you'd expect.

The ratios in the manual gearbox (there is also the £1330 option of a semi-auto DSG 'box) are also ideally spaced to make for fluid progress without running out of revs or falling out of the engine's power band.

Inside, the dash will be familiar to anyone who's been in a current shape Golf. However, the overall impression of the interior is very different - with a low roofline and because the driver's seat doesn't adjust low enough (you certainly don't get that low sporty driving position you do in the Audi TT) this is a lot more cosy.

The only other real issue involves the driver's seat, which doesn't remember its position once it's tilted to allow passengers into the rear.

Rear passengers have limited headroom, too, thanks to that low roof line, but legroom isn't a problem.

The boot's roomy, but access is tricky due to a high sill. But this is a sporty coupe and allowances can be made.

The rival this car will really steal sales from in the immediate future is the outgoing Golf GTI, which is a very similar price but sits two tax bands higher at 25% versus the Scirocco's 23%, despite having the same power output. Which would you rather have?
