I have been asked to speak at a telematics event in November addressing an audience of telematics suppliers who are keen to know why fleets are not buying their products in bigger numbers.
I have my own thoughts on why this may be but I would welcome any feedback from readers of my blog which I could then pass onto the industry.
On a related topic the House of Commons Transport Committee has expressed its concerns recently about the legislation currently in place not being robust enough to protect drivers personal information should it be needed for a congestion charging scheme. This is not really any surprise as privacy has always been a major argument against telematics systems generally.
The Information Commissioner has issued guidelines on using telematics systems but clearly if we all have them then there should be some more stringent control of our personal data and who has access to it. This is understandable but we need to understand what extra burden this will put on the fleet industry before implementation.
So my reading of this is that we can expect more legislation around data collection and retention particularly in relation to congestion relieving schemes. This will be something else that fleet managers will be looking forward to no doubt!
Oh and surprise, surprise the committee also mentioned having one standardised system so there is ease of travelling from one zone to the next. This is something I talked about at the ICFM conference in 2006 which was reported on by BusinessCar.
Maybe one of the committee members reads BusinessCar!
