Choose ESC

Its been a quiet one this week in terms of news. You can always tell when the politicians go on holiday, but something that I have noticed recently is the increase in publicity of the 'Choose ESC' campaign.

I would expect readers of BusinessCar and people connected to the automotive industry to understand what ESC is and how it works but it's getting the message out to the drivers that needs more work. There appears to be a misunderstanding of what ESC does and why its important.

This is not helped by the manufacturers giving essentially the same product a whole host of different names and therefore acronyms. There are currently nine different names for ESC and you can find these by looking on the Thatcham website where there is a lot more detail.

This is not at all helpful to the confused vehicle purchaser who, in reality, is probably more interested in what alloys are going to be fitted and if there is a satnav system.

In addition only 47% of manufacturers fit ESC as standard in the UK market. If the technology is not explained by the dealer properly then the average punter would prefer to spend their limited budget on an improved sound system than a safety feature they might never use.

The average costs of parts is around £100 so the pressure is on for the manufacturers to fit ESC as standard to all new vehicles in the same way that ABS now is. This would avoid a situation where dealers may not explain the technology consistently to all customers. After all the driver does not need to drive differently if ESC is fitted so as long as it is installed it will do the work when or if its needed.

Let's hope that some agreement will soon be forthcoming to make ESC a standard fitment across all manufacturers and with luck they might even call it the same name as well.
