Rewarding telematics

Looking through the winners list from the BusinessCar Awards its great to see that one of the awards is for telematics.

This award truly cements the relationship between the fleet and telematics industry and in the process promotes a positive image for the suppliers.

As we will all have to get used to more of our movements being monitored by increasingly sophisticated technology it's essential the fleet industry works with suppliers to make them understand what we need.

I still think there is a long way to go in building bridges to get over the 'big brother' stereotype but this type of award goes some way to doing that. I can appreciate that there will also be a hardcore of people that will never accept what they see as intrusive monitoring but as I have always said there are benefits to be had for the drivers as well as the managers.

It's about making the most of these when promoting telematics internally. Link the systems to business mileage claims and relieve your drivers of all that monthly paperwork. Give them satellite navigation systems which reduce wasted hours stuck in traffic or getting lost. These small benefits may well go a long way in reducing internal wrangling about the installation of any monitoring system.

On the other side of the fence there is significant work for some telematics suppliers to clean up their act and many companies won't last until 2009. This may well be the year of consolidation but that isn't necessarily bad news.

To sum up lets have more positive promotion of the telematics industry and the benefits that can be achieved through the suitable use of technology.

Roll on BusinessCar awards for 2009!
