The start point for the best source of fleet information

Mike Waters' Blog: 16 December 2010 - Carry the right equipment

So this year the snow has started early. Large swathes of the country have already had enough to disrupt drivers with the worst cases seeing motorists stuck in their vehicles overnight as roads have been closed or become impassable.

While these delays can be frustrating and annoying, they also become dangerous if drivers are ill prepared. Being stuck in a vehicle for several hours in cold conditions is no fun, especially without some vital provisions.

So if the weather looks like turning nasty, remove the golf clubs and shopping bags from your boot and replace them with what could be essential items in an emergency. Now you don't want to include anything that's unnecessary, or for longer than you need, because extra weight in the vehicle will mean that you use more fuel. But check the forecast, and if it's looking bad, here are some of the essentials to pack:

. A blanket - if you get stranded this will provide vital warmth and protection from the elements.

. Sensible footwear (ideally boots) - just in case you need to ditch your vehicle and trek through the snow.

. Food and drink - if you're stuck in the car for hours, you will get hungry and thirsty so a bottle of water and some snack bars will provide some relief.

. Extra layers - a coat, scarf, gloves and warm socks will help to keep you warm, whether you're stuck in your car or having to abandon it and walk.

. Snow shovel - you never know when you're going to have to dig your car out of the snow. Without a shovel, you will be in the unenviable position of using your hands.

. Jump leads - if your motor gives out on you, you may be in need of some assistance from another motorist. Without the leads, they won't be much help.

. Mobile phone - keep it charged in case you get into trouble and need to call for help.

. Ice scraper and de-icer - so that you can keep your windows and mirrors clear and visibility as good as it can be.
