It was interesting to get access to the UK's new budget brand recently, when Renault-owned Dacia finally allowed us to try its first two products and chat about its fleet potential.

Hugely successful across Europe over the best part of a decade since Renault resurrected the marque as a budget offering below its own cars, Dacia has finally crossed the Channel.

There have been a series of mixed messages along the way, with Renault initially saying it wouldn't bring Dacia here because of the cost of right-hand drive conversion and concerns that there wasn't the appetite for the brand, but more recently, most of the chat from the company at a European level was that there would be very limited fleet appeal in the UK, and Dacia would only be actively courting retail customers.

The brand's product manager has since told BusinessCar that there has been a re-think on fleet appeal, and, as long as fleet customers understand that Dacia has a firm no-discount policy, then they are more than welcome, and have already been making enquiries.

It will be fascinating to see where Dacia's fleet business comes from, and there will undoubtedly be more interest than the firm originally seemed to think there would be. It claims early expressions are across a broad scale, but I suspect the unpretentious but very budget nature of the vehicles will lend itself to job-need or pool car activity, with user choosers, traditionally more loving of creature comforts, finding it a stretch too far to downgrade kit and quality by taking the UK's cheapest new cars.
