Road Safety Bill moves a step closer

Date: 10 October 2006

The Road Safety Bill has moved a stage closer to becoming law with its third reading in the House of Commons.

The bill includes graduated speeding penalty points, a new offence of causing death by reckless driving, and will make phone-driving an endorsable offence.

The Commons also proposed several amendments, including making it the duty of the secretary of state for transport to review night-driving road safety and investigating the effect of extending British Summer Time.

The Government will also issue guidance on traffic light timing to maximise traffic flow.

The bill will now go to back to the House of Lords for approval of the amendments.

The Department for Transport expects the Road Safety Bill to become law early in 2007.
