NCAP quibbles over Mazda and Volvo faults despite five-star performance

The latest Euro NCAP crash tests have provoked criticism of the Volvo V70 and Mazda 2 despite both scoring the maximum five stars for occupant protection.
The latest results saw five new models tested as well as a re-test for Honda's Civic, which came out better though with no improvement to its star ratings.
The problems with the Mazda and Volvo surrounded airbag deployment. Both have now had software upgrades to cure the problem.
The V70 and 2 were among four vehicles that hit the five-star maximum for adult occupant protection, along with the new Renault Laguna and Mercedes C-class. The retested Honda Civic maintained its four-star rating for adult occupant protection, joined by the Daihatsu Materia.
All bar the three-star Civic disappointed NCAP by scoring just two out of four for pedestrian protection.
The C-class and Materia were a star behind the others for child occupant protection, scoring three out of five to the other cars' four.
