Train us, safety expert demands of makers

Car manufacturers have been criticised for not providing proper training for the safe use of complicated in-car information and entertainment systems.

"There's a fine balance between what's aiding you and what's distracting you," said Chris Frost of Brake, speaking at one of last Thursday's BusinessCar Live conferences. "Manufacturers should be giving more training."

Ever-more intelligent computer systems are supplying drivers with an array of information, from fuel economy to traffic warnings, but there's a worry among fleet safety experts that they are diverting driver attention. "There are a lot of tools out there that without proper training can lead to serious incidents," said Frost.

Frost, manager of the road safety charity's fleet safety forum, also spoke about the marketing benefits of a strong company safety policy. The publicity can eclipse the costs, he said, citing the example of vehicle delivery company NKL Automotive, whose wide-ranging good-driving campaign had garnered it awards and column inches.
