DfT launches new sleep-drive campaign

Date: 03 April 2008

The Department for Transport is launching a new £800,000 advertising campaign to alert drivers to the dangers of driving while tired.

According to You Gov research, tired drivers cause one in five of all crashes on major roads, yet only 22% of drivers regularly plan breaks into their journeys.

The research also showed that only 18% of drivers take yawning as a sign to pull over.

"People who drive for work are particularly at risk, but there are simple steps we can all take to make our journeys safer," according to road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick.

"Plan regular stops into a long trip, and if you feel yourself yawning pull over and take a break."

Campaign advertising will run over the radio, online and at service station washrooms, petrol pumps and forecourts.
