£30m to help build electric network

Date: 23 November 2009

The Government has pledged £30m to help develop a car recharging infrastructure in between three and six UK regions as a precursor to a nationwide network.

The Plugged-In Places initiative was announced by transport secretary Andrew Adonis, and will fund charging points on streets, in car parks and commercial, retail and leisure facilities.

"Our aim is for electric and low-carbon cars to be an everyday feature of life on UK roads in less than five years," said Adonis.

The deadline for the first round of applications is 31 January 2010, with the announcement about successful applicants coming in March 2010. There will also be a second round of applications next June, with more places announced in late 2010.
