Businesses urged to increase electronic security

Date: 28 August 2009

Firms are being urged to encrypt all laptops and smartphones that contain personal information after a warning from Government agency the Information Commissioner's Office that password protection is not enough.

The move follows an incident when an employee at parcel firm UPS had their laptop stolen. It contained the payroll data of 9150 employees and, though password protected, was not deemed secure.

Assistant Information Commissioner Mick Gorrill, said: "Password protected laptops are not secure. I urge all organisations to restrict the amount of personal information that is taken off secure sites."
