Motorway repair bill nears £1bn

Total spend on motorway and main road maintenance hit nearly £1 billion in the last financial year.

The firgure was revealed in a written answer to a question by Conservative shadow transport minister Theresa Villiers who asked transport minister Chris Mole how much the DfT had spent on emergency repairs to the strategic road network in each year since 2000.

Mole revealed that the DfT does not record this information, only the total spend on maintenance which hit £914 million in 2008-2009, up from £879 in the previous year.

Mole added that the costs excluded those associated with PFI contracts.
