Grampian police force marks first blue light order for Vauxhall Ampera

Ampera

Grampian police force is believed to be the first blue light fleet operator to order Vauxhall's Ampera electric range extender, while Vauxhall MD Duncan Aldred has also reported "strong interest from major green corporates".

Aldred said: "We have taken firm orders from several police forces and are in detailed conversations with London's Metropolitan Police.

"So the Ampera fits the bill from their environmental point of view. Green corporates will be among the early adopters because of their emissions' targets. The Ampera is visibly green and futuristic."

Aldred forecast that nearly 2000 or 60% of the 3300 Amperas expected to be sold this year will be fleet registrations and claimed that the US-built petrol-electric range extender provided "the tools to change Vauxhall as a brand forever. It will also present a glow or halo background for the five new cars we are planning to launch over the next 12 months."

On the user chooser front Aldred said the Ampera, due to market in May, "represents a genuine opportunity to take conquest business from premium brands. Lots of reservations have been made from people running corporate Audis, BMWs and Mercedes."

He added that the recent winning of the European Car of the Year award "provided a tremendous springboard into the business market.

"It is important for new progressive technology because within fleet there is always nervousness about making a leap of faith. We have worked hard on the leasing proposition and personal BIK for user choosers, which will be exceptionally good."

Aldred claimed that the Mokka small SUV, due to be released for sale next January, "has a lot of legs in fleet, with a potential 40% business factor. We plan to have a very good BIK factor for significant public sector exposure. We will do our sums on price sensitivity and deposits but it will not be a volume driver for Motability."
