London minicab company defies 'anti-competitive' bus lane ban

Date: 07 May 2012   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

London minicab firm Addison Lee has told its drivers to use the capital's bus lanes, despite the fact that they're reserved for licensed black taxis and buses.

John Griffin, the company's founder and chairman, wrote a letter to its 3500 drivers, instructing them to flout the rules. He said: "The bus lane discrimination is anti-competitive and unfairly discriminates against the millions of passengers that use Addison Lee."

Griffin, who is a major donator to the Conservative Party, has promised to cover any fines

that result from the action, the highest of which is £1000. The company has arranged for a judicial review of London's bus lane laws later in the year but intends to continue using them despite the current law.

Transport for London has condemned Addison Lee's action, dubbing it "irresponsible", and has threatened regulatory action.

It also said that drivers may be prosecuted if they follow the company's instructions and that the company's licence to trade could be reconsidered.

A number of Addison Lee's drivers have already been issued with penalty charge notices as a result of driving in the bus lanes, but the company claims that many have gone unnoticed because of a lack of enforcement cameras.
