SMMT: new car sales exceed expectations in March

Date: 09 April 2013   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has reported unexpectedly strong new car sales for March.

The new car market is up almost 6% year-on-year, some of which is said to be down to the introduction of the new 13 plate number plates.

A total of 394,806 cars were registered with the new plates (5.9% up on March 2012).

The SMMT's figures suggest that fleet and business sales accounted for 48.3% of sales.

March marks the 13th consecutive month of growth for the UK new car market. It is now at its strongest level since the Scrappage Scheme was in place in 2010.

Total registrations for 2012 so far stand at 605,198, which is 7.4% up on 2012.

The SMMT's interim chief executive, Mike Baunton, said: "Despite ongoing economic concerns, consistent monthly growth in the market is an encouraging sign of returning consumer confidence as motorists are attracted to forecourts by new models and the latest technologies."
