Volvo has revealed the first images and details of its new seven-seater XC90, which will be priced from £45,000 when it goes on sale in the UK in May 2015.

The second-generation XC90 will launch with a 60g/km plug-in hybrid version which has a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine mated to an 80bhp electric motor to boost total power to 400hp. The hybrid puts it in the 5% BIK band for company car drivers.

The XC90 will also feature a range of 2.0-litre four-cylinder Drive-E engines.

The XC90 has been in need of a replacement as the current model has been on sale since 2002. The current model is priced from £37,115.

The new model comes with new standard safety technologies, including a run-off road protection package and auto brake at junction capability.

In a run-off road scenario, the XC90 detects what is happening and the front safety belts are tightened to keep the occupants in position. The XC90's seats are built with an energy absorbing functionality between the seat and the seat frame to absorb kinetic energy and direct it away from the passenger.

The auto braking technology stops the car if the driver turns in front of an oncoming car at a junction.

The design of the new SUV is the start of Volvo's new design language and fleets can expect the next brace of Volvos to feature a similar look.

New interior features include a new tablet-like touch screen, which does away with most of the buttons on the centre console.

Volvo will be selling the XC90 with a choice of optional bodykits, an Urban Luxury package which combines a colour co-ordinated body kit with polished stainless steel details, 21-inch wheels, front and rear skid plates and side scuff plates.

There will also be a Rugged Luxury kit, which includes a tech matte black exterior trim, stainless steel skid plates, running boards with illumination, integrated exhaust pipes and 22-inch wheels.

Volvo will be launching 1927 XC90 first edition cars to celebrate the founding of the Swedish company 87 years ago.

The special edition models will only be available for sale online, directly through Volvo. The First Edition model is priced from £68,000 and orders open on September 3.

The XC90 First Edition comes with a 225hp D5 twin turbo diesel mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Standard equipment includes electronically controlled air suspension with five modes, black exterior, eight-spoke, 21-inch alloys, Nappa leather seats and walnut inlays. Each of the three rows of seats are power-operated and the front seats are ventilated.
