Volvo XC90: first look at new car's interiors

Date: 27 May 2014

Volvo is taking a novel approach to unveiling the latest generation of its XC90 - in releasing specifications for its interiors first.

From its initial photos, the car, which will be launched later this summer and is now in its 12th year, has been given a strong styling makeover and packed with technology.

The Swedish manufacturer has chosen the latest incarnation to debut its 'scalable product architecture' concept that aims to enhance safety features and improve overall internet connectivity of in-car devices with its tablet-inspired central touch screen.

Maintaining its high quality interiors, the XC90 features leather seating, wooden detailing and a gear-lever made of crystal glass from Orrefors, the famous Swedish glass maker.

There are some smart finishing touches including diamond-cut controls for the start/stop button and volume control.

Full details of its price range, performance specifications and engine line-up are due to be released later this summer.

Thomas Ingenlath, Volvo's senior vice president of design welcomed its arrival. He said: "The most striking feature is a tablet-like touch screen control console, which forms the heart of an all-new in-car control system," said Thomas of Volvo Cars. This system is virtually button free and represents an entirely new way for drivers to control their car and access a range of Internet-based products and services.

"The customer and the customer experience are at the heart of everything we do at Volvo Cars. We don't do technology for technology's sake - everything in a Volvo is there to make our cars safer and more pleasurable to drive," added Alain Visser, the firm's senior vice president of marketing.
