TomTom launches online-based navigation services

Date: 03 June 2015   |   Author: Daniel Puddicombe

TomTom has said it can now allow car makers to sync navigation units with devices including smartphones, tablets and wearable technology like smartwatches to extend the user experience.

The system is powered by cloud-based components, which have been designed to be used by developers of embedded systems, mobile apps and web portals.

TomTom suggested the system could be used to plan a trip on a route-planning website on a laptop, departure warnings on a wearable device and mile navigation on a smartphone could automatically sync with the car's navigation unit.

"We now allow car makers, developers and third-parties to extend the reach of embedded navigation systems", said Jan-Maarten de Vries, vice-president, automotive product marketing at TomTom.
