Ford Galaxy facelift: Test Drive Review

Date: 19 May 2010   |   Author: Rachel Burgess

Category: MPV P11D
P11D price: £24,260
Key rival: Volkswagen Sharan

The Ford Galaxy is a segment leader, outselling its nearest competitor, the Volkswagen Sharan, five to one.

Last year the Ford MPV sold around 8000 models, with more than 80% going to fleets. The revised model, on sale last month, will bring more sales says Ford, although no official forecasts have been announced.

There's no reduction in CO2 on the facelift, but it still falls below the notable 160g/km bracket for fleets, with BIK of 23%.

The mid-range trim Zetec in partnership with the 139hp 2.0-litre diesel engine will be the most popular fleet model, costing £24,285 and offering a cost per mile of 55.5p.

Prices for the Galaxy range from between £2000-£3000 less than the outgoing model, says Ford.

Currently, automatic transmission accounts for 35% of Galaxy's fleet sales, below the segment norm of 50%. However, with Ford introducing its Powershift dual-clutch transmission to its large car range, sales are expected to move in line with the overall trend.

The facelift means a more sculpted bonnet as well as new fog and LED tail lights. High series models get more chrome detailing on side mouldings and door handles.

Interior-wise, Ford's fold-flat seat system comes as standard and a "premium" sound system with upgraded speakers and subwoofer is an option.

There is ample room for seven people with an array of compartments to hide away stuff, as well as mirrors that allow drivers to see what kids are up to in the back, dual-zone air conditioning, front and rear parking assist, and lights for first- and second-row occupants.

Any Ford vehicle is hard to fault in terms of ride and drive quality and the same applies with the latest Galaxy. It handles like a much smaller car with good suspension and road presence, and has plenty of torque despite being a large MPV.

As the figures suggests, its hard to beat the Galaxy in this sector - but despite cost reductions, you'll still pay a premium for the goods.
