Volvo V60 T3 R-design 1.6 148hp: Test Drive Review

Date: 27 May 2011

Category: Estate
P11D price: £26,065
Key rival: BMW 3-series Touring

The new Volvo V60 was launched last year to compete with the Mercedes C-class estate, BMW 3-series Touring and Audi's A4 Avant.

The estate Volvo, as tested, showcases the brand's new 1.6-litre turbo petrol producing 148hp, which is badged T3 and takes some fleet sales thanks to sub-160g/km CO2. However, most corporate buyers will still opt for the 2.0-litre diesel iterations, until the imminent arrival of the Driv-e model at least, with 119g/km.

The V60 is an impressive drive with excellent handling and steering, and the top-of-the-range R-Design trim is headturning from the outside, and Smart and comfortable on the inside. On the downside, the engine lacks mid-range power and needs pushing to reach 60mph-plus.

At 63.4 pence per mile, the T3 R-Design certainly isn't the most financially enticing model of the range, but it is a pleasure to drive.
