Honda Civic 2.2 i-DTEC ES: Test Drive Review

Date: 03 April 2012

What's new: Honda has returned to the lower medium diesel business car market after a 12-month absence with the all-new Civic, sporting futuristic looks and a powerful but clean 2.2-litre diesel engine.

Excellent: It's one of the best-performing diesel models in its class. Expect 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds and 135mph. Handling is also a strong point - it's sharp and surprisingly engaging.

Good: Quick it may be but the Civic is also good for 110g/km and 67.3mpg. That puts it at the mercy of next month's tax changes, but the figures are still impressively low all things considered.

Average: Fit and finish inside is good and Honda's reliability is never suspect, but some of the switchgear appears outdated and is unlikely to appeal to drivers used to the interiors of European rivals.

Poor: Rear visibility is appalling. The split rear screen and spoiler hamper the view out of the back severely.

Verdict: A welcome return to the business car market for Honda. The Civic isn't flawless but it represents an improvement over its predecessor and offers good costs and strong performance.
