Paul Barker's Blog: 20 March 2013 - Geneva shows it's better across the board

This year's Geneva motor show was an interesting event, although there wasn't a stand out headline model for the corporate car market.

While there was plenty of excitement and drama from the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Rolls-Royce and Bentley, there were other developments of greater interest to the corporate marketplace.

The key message is the astonishing rate at which emissions continue to plunge as manufacturers carry on pushing forward with improvements that defy conventional wisdom about how low vehicle CO2 output can go.

With the help of hybrid technology, the Lexus IS will later this year offer a sub-100g/km 220hp 2.5-litre compact executive saloon, while the Volkswagen Golf Bluemotion hatchback will be down to 85g/km for a 110hp 1.6 diesel, and its estate sibling, along with Skoda's Octavia, will be at 87g/km.

And there should still be more to come, with no carmaker yet willing to admit that they have reached the end of the line in terms of internal combustion engine development.

This week's Budget statement is likely to tighten the emissions framework around company car benefit-in-kind taxation, and although more tax is never a good thing, it will be worth remembering that manufacturers have well and truly taken up the baton of emissions reduction and are staying at least one step ahead of the legislators.
