BusinessCar Awards 2015 - Mainstream Lower Medium: Volkswagen Golf

Date: 27 January 2015

The Golf - probably the most attainable of desirable cars on the company car roster. Despite competing in the mainstream, it has always maintained an air of superiority and premium status. And the new model, launched in early 2013 and the winner of the 2014 Business Car of the Year Award, has maintained that inherently Golf quality.

The core 105hp 1.6 diesel emits just under 100g/km, and if you want more efficiency there's an 85g/km Bluemotion. Even the sporty 184hp GTD produces a modest 109g/km. All models get Bluetooth and DAB, while the Match spec, one up from entry-level, adds alloy wheels, auto lights and wipers, adaptive cruise control and front and rear parking sensors.

While the mainstream range offers everything a lower medium company car driver could want, VW also has electric and plug-in hybrids. The e-Golf is based on SE spec, adds satnav and is capable of around 100 miles. We called it "the car of choice for businesses looking for an EV option". Then there's the Golf GTE, a petrol-electric plug-in with a 300-mile range.

There really is a Golf for everyone. And that's one reason why it's our Mainstream Lower Medium Car of the Year
