Manchester bids for C-charge status

Date: 06 August 2007

Fleets' administration woes are expected to increase if Greater Manchester's councils are given Government funding for the UK's second congestion-charging scheme.

At the end of last month the group of 10 councils voted to bid for a grant of £1.2 billion and permission to borrow £1.8bn from the Government's transport innovation fund. The Government fund set up to beat congestion has 1.4bn set aside for such schemes.

Experts believe that, should it get the go-ahead, the £5-a-day Manchester scheme is unlikely to link to London's £8-a-day C-charge, so creating an admin hurdle for fleets to manage.
