The start point for the best source of fleet information

Peugeot 308 aims for quality act

Date: 28 June 2007   |   Author: Hugh Hunston

Peugeot is targeting up to 25% business conquest sales for its larger, greener and more economical new 308, which features an interior benchmarked on Audis.

That is the aim of Peugeot's fleet and leasing director Steve Harris, who believes the 308 hatchback could raise its diesel fleet factor to 80% courtesy of a new 90PS, 1.6-litre HDI, engine that cuts CO2 emissions to 120gms/km.

Speaking at the car's unveiling in France, Harris said: "We plan to consolidate the 307's 60% fleet factor by retaining current 307 users and pulling customers across from lower medium rivals and down from the upper medium sector. Conquests should be between 20% and 25%."

He admitted that the 407 was not immune from the downsizing trend although Harris did not expect "wholesale cannibalisation".

Longer, wider and lower than the 307, the 308 will be promoted on enhanced quality and reliability, environmental credentials and "duty of care" safety equipment, including six standard airbags.

Harris anticipated SMR levels will be "at least as good" as the 307 when the 308 comes to market in September and claimed previews for the value guides had prompted "generally positive RV feedback assisted by moving cabin quality up a notch by benchmarking Audi".

Peugeot's fleet executive ruled out following Citroen's fleet specific VTX P11D model pricing strategy, arguing: "I am not convinced that these cars' RVs don't suffer from a fleet special perception."

Harris predicted that 1.6-litre, 90PS diesel model, capable of 60mpg and fitted with Michelin low resistance tyres "tick the boxes for environmentally and cost conscious fleets".

Improved CO2 ratings are consolidated by cleaner 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol units, shared with BMW, ranging from 95PS to 150PS. Due early next year the SW estate, in five- and seven-seat forms, should take 30% of fleet volumes. 308 prices are expected to match the 307, starting below £12,000.

A "modest number of daily rental sales at launch will involve Avis hire car customers providing genuine and rapid driver feedback".
