Mercedes unveils 69g/km S-class hybrid

Date: 09 September 2013

Mercedes has announced a third model in its S-Class hybrid line-up, and the first plug-in, in the form of the S500. Launching next year, and following in the footsteps of the regular S400 Hybrid and S300 Bluetec Hybrid models, the iteration will offer emission of 69g/km and return 94.2mpg.

While the S300 Hybrid and S300 Bluetec Hybrid are charged only during braking or coasting or by the combustion engine, the lithium-ion battery of the S500 Plug-in Hybrid has the option of being recharged from an external charging socket, meaning it has a longer electric-only range.

The car uses a 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged engine alongside an 80kW electric motor and does 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds, with a top speed of 155mph. On electric power alone it offers a range of 18 miles, according to Mercedes.

Prices and specification will be announced in due course.
