BMW 328i Modern: Test Drive Review

Date: 12 June 2012

BMW

Diesel variants of the 3-series and the ultra-clean Efficient Dynamics model grab all the headlines when it comes to corporate sector sales, but the chasm between prices at the pumps means you have to be racking up some serious miles before diesel becomes a no-brainer.

That's where the 328i comes into its own, offering the same 'all boxes ticked' approach for business drivers along with a potent 245hp 2.0-litre petrol engine. While a good 20mpg shy of the flagship Efficient Dynamics model, a claimed figure of 44.1mpg is still respectable for such a powerful petrol, as are emissions of 149g/km.

It's quiet, comfortable and responsive. The engine requires a little more encouragement from low-mid revs than an equivalent diesel, but there's much more power higher up and it's more engaging for it. Meanwhile, the usual 3-series hallmarks of a solid build, excellent ride and handling and badge appeal all remain.

Verdict: A terrific all-rounder for lower-mileage business drivers
