JULIE JENNER: Different role, same passion

Date: 03 September 2013

The former chairman's new role will be somewhere between strategic and diplomatic functions.

"Everyone has responsibility for the strategic direction of ACFO but it's easier for me to develop relationships already started in the last seven years," she states, adding that the entire management team of ACFO will still have responsibility for attending meetings, consultations and lobbying.

"We've got a new relationship to build with Gerry Keaney [new chief-executive of the BVRLA], and we need to try to re-engage with [HM] Revenue & Customs - there haven't been too many things we have needed to go and discuss with them recently because we've already got a lot of what we've asked for," Jenner explains. "We have achieved an awful lot and received what we asked for so we haven't had the need to push for a meeting."

But that doesn't mean there won't be further lobbying of Government, with Jenner pinpointing the continued subsidy for electric vehicles, and particularly the EV benefit-in-kind rates: "We all know they will jump from 0% to 5%, which is a hell of a lot better than 14%, but if take-up is this low at 0%, what will it be at 5%?"

The DVLA will be another target for relationship-building, with particular regard to issues such as the closure of local offices and the potential abolishment of the counterpart element of the driving licence, and the way both of these impact upon the business car sector.

But with a new chapter beginning and a new team now heading ACFO, how does Jenner feel it has developed?

"Is ACFO a different organisation to seven years ago? No, but is it more structured? Yes, and it's more focused, but not because of me, but because of a group of people that had been working together for the last few years," she says.
