Tougher phone-drive penalties

According to the latest Government statistics the number of car drivers using a hand held mobile phone has dropped by 40% between September 2006 and August 2007. This equates to 1% of drivers still illegally using a mobile phone.

I'm not sure where they get their figures from but I think they are just plain wrong. Interestingly the press release doesn't show how this new research was carried out.

Every time I am in my car I still see a lot of drivers with a phone glued to their ear. At a recent ACFO meeting it was suggested the penalty should be increased again as the current punishment doesn't do enough to deter the persistent offenders.

Perhaps a thousand pound fine and six points may do the trick. Anyway the recent publicity is due to the launch of a Think campaign to highlight the issues and dangers so follow the link if you want to find out more.

Also this week the Mayor of London has introduced the expected changes to the congestion charging zone as mentioned in Mark Sinclair's Blog.

There was some concern that Ken may lower the 120g/km 100% discount threshold after the rush of manufacturers to get below this figure but that hasn't happened which is positive news.

I would expect the CO2 figure to lower over the next few years and I'm sure Transport for London would like to get the emissions target down to 100g/km or below when there are suitable vehicles available for purchase or more likely when they start to loose too much income.
