A picture paints a thousand words

The Highways Agency has announced that we will soon be seeing pictures instead of words on the M42.

Apparently they are going to be using internationally recognised signs to tell us what is happening ahead. Due to the number of foreign drivers on the M42 this will make it easier for them to understand what happening. I want to know what the sign for 'get off your mobile phone' because the last time I was up there most illegal phone users had foreign registration plates. Of course they currently can't get the three points on their licence so what do they care.

As I'm writing this on the 29th February the extra day in leap years delays the introduction of new '08 plates by one day but do many people actually understand the new plate system? The new registration plate was introduced in September 2001 and will cover a 50 year period up until 2051.

I expect by then we will be hovering around in air-powered jet ships so the system will have to change again. I'm sure that most people not connected to the motor trade don't really care about having the latest plate and there has certainly been a decline in advertising to tempt people into a new registration. It does make me wonder though about how many naive retail punters buy a car in the month prior to a new registration while the dealer licks its lips on the way to its target.
