Having just put a selection of our drivers through the Government backed SAFED training for vans I was fascinated to look through the results I got back.

The general way of doing this training is the drivers does two trips following the exact same route and their performance is measured in terms of errors and gear changes made.

The fuel consumption is measured on the first run and then measured again on the second run along with the time taken to drive both routes.

All this information is then collated into a results spreadsheet that shows the potential savings. Having done some further analysis of my 18 drivers and extrapolated this over the remaining fleet based on one month's fuel costs the savings are evident.

Over these sessions 18 drivers were trained and an average fuel consumption saving of 14.32% was shown. In addition to this driving faults were reduced by 50%, gear changes by 31% and the time taken to drive the route reduced by 2%. One of the arguments often used is that driving more economically is slower so it's good to see actually there was a slight increase in speed over the route.

In addition to all these positives if the figures were extrapolated over the fleet we could save almost 20 tons of carbon emissions per annum.

SAFED use a wide range of driver training suppliers and the details of these can be found on their website. We were set up with a company called Big Red Fleet.

Now the drivers just have to keep the momentum going by continuing to drive in the same way until I can organise some refresher courses.
