Found a great website for finding places to park in central London.

Go to www.Park-Up.com, type in a street name or postcode, and the site returns a list car parks and on-street parking, alongside parking for motorbikes and the disabled, that are available in the vicinity.

It also tells you the amount of spaces or bays that are at each location plus hours or operation, tariffs, maximum stay etc.

Unregistered computer users get a couple of free searches per day. If you want more, or if using the site from a mobile internet device, you'll need to be registered and to have purchased usage credits, which can only be bought from the desktop for now.

Credit prices range from £4.99 for 15 to £19.99 for 125, and one credit equals one search.

I've used the site once, and while it can't tell you if a space is free, it's brilliant. I used to find several potential on-street parking locations near my destination, which I then printed out and took with me. Doing so certainly alleviated the stress of not knowing where to leave the car in an unfamiliar part of London, particularly as I knew I had second, third and fourth choice streets to head for if all the spaces in my preferred place choice were occupied.

Sadly, however, there's no SMS service as yet, though it is apparently "under development".
