Traffic fines double as authorities clamp down

Date: 04 June 2007

National Car Rental has reported a massive increase in traffic fines across the first quarter of the year.

Compared with the first three months of 2006, the number of penalties incurred by NCR's customers was up 96.8%. The firm says much of the increase is due to increased focus on motoring offences by Transport for London, the biggest issuer of tickets in the country.

National also points to the London congestion charge zone enlargement, with a 50% increase in the number of fines between February and March this year highlighting initial problems with drivers not being used to the new area.

The only good news was National reporting that February saw the lowest number of speeding fines since March 2003, along with a 9% fall in the first quarter of 2007.
