Vauxhall hurt by sales 'turmoil'

Date: 23 September 2009   |   Author: Hugh Hunston

Nine months of "turmoil and uncertainty" about GM Europe's future led to some "major and minor" fleet contracts being put on hold, but the recent clarification has unfrozen most, according to Alain Visser, GM's European marketing boss.

Confirming that "in some markets, on some occasions there was hesitancy to sign deals because of uncertainty", Visser said: "Key European customers were kept in close touch with developments and most contracts have been retrospectively signed."

He doubted if Chevrolet and Saab would challenge Vauxhall in fleet and maintained there was little cannibalisation between the brands. "Vauxhall is a volume brand moving upmarket slightly and it makes sense for Chevrolet to strengthen its current position rather than move upscale. There is space for the three brands at different levels."
