Seat develops first electric models

Seat has developed its first ever electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The Altea XL Electric Ecomotive and the Leon Twindrive Ecomotive are the company's first attempts at either technology, and prototype versions of each one are already on trial in Spain and will remain so for the coming months.
An uncharacteristically large choice for a fully electric car, the Altea XL is powered solely by an 85kW motor and has a range of 84 miles. It's also capable of circulating air in the cabin while stationary via photovoltaic cells in the roof, to reduce the work for the climate control system on the move.
The Leon Twindrive plug-in hybrid can travel for 32 miles on electricity alone and 559 miles with a full charge and a full tank of fuel. Fuel economy and emissions equate to 166mpg and 39g/km.
Seat expects the Leon Twindrive to go on sale in Spain in 2015, followed by the fully electric Altea a year later.
