Olympic Games Lane fines total £312,000

Date: 20 August 2012   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

Transport for London issued £312,000 in fines to drivers who incorrectly used the temporary Olympic Games Lanes for the duration of the event.

The fines, which amounted to 2400 individual tickets, equated to £130 per offence.

TfL's chief operating officer for surface transport Garrett Emmerson said: "We have no interest in unnecessarily penalising drivers and, with a very high compliance rate of around 98%, the overwhelming majority [followed] the requirement to stay out of Games Lanes when they are in use. We're seeking compliance from drivers, not income from fines."

The first of the lanes came into operation on 25 July - six days before the Games began with the intention of familiarising drivers with their location and general existence in advance.

During this period, motorists were issued with warning notices rather than fixed penalty fines and the latter only came into operation when the Olympic Games commenced.

TfL erected a 150-strong network of variable message boards along the roads affected by the Olympic Route Network and the Games Lanes around London.

The Paralympic Games are due to commence on 29 August, when the Paralympic Route Network (PRN) will come into force.
