Businesses are calling for insurance premiums to be cut for drivers with good eyesight, according to research.
Specsavers Corporate Eyecare found that 71% of employers believe premiums should decrease if employees have recently passed a full sight test.
The survey also showed that 74% of firms were more likely to choose an insurance company that offered sight tests as part of a policy.
Insurer RSA has backed the initiative: "We want safe drivers on the roads, and we believe that good eyesight is imperative for good driving," said Jon Sellors, group head of thought leadership.
"Fleet operators adopting a systematic approach to driver eye tests will be able to obtain lower insurance premiums, especially when they do this as part of a proactive approach to fleet risk management."
Jim Lythgow, director of strategic alliances for Specsavers Corporate Eyecare said: "We believe that drivers who have good eyesight are safer than those who don't.
"If insurance companies can encourage employers to test the eyesight of their staff that drive then this must be a good thing."
This follows fleet consultancy firm TR Fleet's partnership with Specsavers as reported in 5 February issue of BusinessCar.
Drivers using the company's risk management system are automatically issued with a voucher for a free eye test if they declare that they are due for a check-up. After it has been used, the system shows that the driver is up-to-date.
