Shell and PayPal announce mobile payment service

Shell and payment giant PayPal have announced a new service that will allow customers to pay for fuel using their mobiles.
Shell previously trialed the system in 2013, and said it will pilot the service for invited Shell Drivers' Club customers in April before rolling it out across the country in 2015.
The fuel giant said the vast majority of its 1000 stations are planning to offer the technology once it is rolled out.
Consumers can use the service through either the existing Shell Motorist App or the PayPal app.
The system works by the driver selecting the corresponding pump on the app once on the forecourt. The system then authenticates the transaction, allowing the motorist to fill up with fuel. Once the vehicle is refueled a receipt is sent to the smartphone and the driver is free to drive away.
Shell said the system would be compatible with Apple, Andriod and Windows devices.
"We've created a simple and secure way to use mobile phones to pay at the pump nationwide. At PayPal, we've always believed people will use their mobile phones to pay if there's a clear benefit," said Rob Harper, director of mobile commerce at Paypal. "We're offering drivers a faster way to fill up their car and pay, and get back on the road."
