Category: Upper medium
P11D price: £33,555
Key rival: Audi A4

One of the tyres on my little Mazda MX-5 had a split in the sidewall a couple of weeks back, so I lobbed the offending wheel into the 330d's boot to get it fixed.

While at the tyre fitting place, the technician I was chatting to took one look at the BMW's tyres and said: "Good job it's not one of those you need replacing, they'll be expensive. And are they run-flats? Even more so then." Which was ominous.

Run-flats should, in theory, be less susceptible to damage, but a hole in the sidewall and the bill could make interesting reading.
