The start point for the best source of fleet information

Mike Waters' blog: 8 November 2010 - Can high fuel prices help speed reduction?

I was interested to see that a survey by RoadPilot has found that 46% of UK motorists claim to have reduced their average speed in the last 12 months with concerns over rising fuel costs as the main reason for the change in behaviour. It also reveals that drivers in the UK are also monitoring their fuel consumption more closely than ever.

If these findings are a reality, it's great to see that that drivers are reducing speed which has a positive safety as well as cost saving benefit; there is no doubt that changing driving style can help to make significant savings on fuel bills.

And it's not just motorists that are making positive behavioural changes as a result of high fuel prices, businesses are too, with pump prices acting as a catalyst for companies who haven't done so to take tighter control over their fuel expenditure. However, for a fleet, encouraging drivers to reduce speed should be just one element of a package of measures that is used to manage fuel expenditure more effectively.

With VAT rising to 20% in January and duty rises planned, it is more important than ever that fleets get an understanding of their total fuel bill including how much individual drivers are paying and where they are filling up, so they can see the significant impact this increase will make. They can then identify areas of cost savings which includes highlighting drivers who have a high cost per mile and taking action to remedy this, whether it be changing driving style, vehicle choice or implementing a fuel policy which encourages drivers to fill up at low cost sites.

Drivers and businesses are certainly feeling the pinch at the moment and as we approach the New Year it is a good time to put fuel bills under scrutiny to see where savings can be made. If this also has a positive impact on safety through reduced speed, then even better.
