Fleets delaying purchasing

Date: 29 July 2010

Fleets are playing a waiting game on purchasing decisions because of uncertainty over the economy, according to Ford's fleet boss Kevin Griffin.

When quizzed about the outlook for car sales in 2010 by BusinessCar, Griffin said: "There's certainly a reduction year-on-year in retail. In fleet there's been a sharp intake of breath about the possibility of 'recession two' and this is affecting people making short-, mid- and long-term decisions. Fleets are deferring renewal decisions for three or four months and using short-term rental."

However, Griffin added he was not planning to increase Ford's daily rental volume because of this.

"We restrict volume to daily rental; we have relationships that work for us. If we have a corporate client [fleet customer] we will liaise with a rental firm to make sure the corporate customer is in our product. It's not always possible, but we do our best.

"Fleet is built up of lots of channels and we want to be in all to a certain degree."

Speaking about the price cuts and how the VAT change from 17.5% to 20% would alter P11D prices in 2011, Griffin said: "We have no plans to further adjust the P11D with the increase in VAT."
